Nissan expected to boost profits with its $3,000 car
Profitability for Nissan Motor Co. is expected to increase with its use of the low-cost production techniques used by its local partner in India as they go about producing the $3,000 car.
In a recent interview in Yokohama, Gilles Normand, Nissan’s corporate vice president in charge of Africa, the Middle East and India, said that the talks with Bajaj Auto Ltd. have led to the realization that Nissan’s margin on three-wheeler activities is far above the current margin on its four-wheeler activities. Normand said further that the low-cost car will contribute to its growth in terms of “volume and profitability.” A company forecast indicates that Nissan may post an operating margin of 4% for the year that ended March 31, compared with Bajaj’s 10.5% for the year that ended in March 2009. Bajaj, which is based in Pune, India, didn’t make a forecast for the most recent fiscal year. Nissan will be introducing a low-cost vehicle in 2012 to rival Tata Motors Ltd.’s $2,500 Nano, the world’s cheapest passenger car. Normand said that Nissan aims to take advantage of Indian expertise in low-cost production. Notably, about 50% of the Indian four-wheel auto market comprises models priced below $8,000.
Ford was No.1 in Europe for March with sales exceeding 192,000 vehicles
With new-car sales in Europe growing by 16.1% in March, Ford Motor Co. gets the recognition for being its top-selling brand for the month. But following the termination of scrappage incentives in its key markets,
Ford is asking governments to consider coming up with new incentives to maintain its sales. Wolfgang Schneider, Ford of Europe’s vice president for legal, governmental and environmental affairs, said that even as Ford has had a great sales performance in March and in the first quarter, the next few months would pose a challenge due to the phasing out of these scrappage schemes. Schneider asserted further that while all the scrappage programs in the western European markets will be over by the end of May, the crisis is not yet over. Schneider isn’t expecting the governments to renew the schemes but only that they consider other sales incentives, including VAT reductions and other tax breaks to urge small and medium sized enterprises to get new vehicles. In a conference call, Schneider said that tax breaks would benefit smaller companies as well as the general economy and the car industry. Roelant de Waard, Ford of Europe head of sales, said that the total market for new cars in western Europe is expected to drop considerably to between 13.5 million and 14.5 million in 2010, from 15.85 million last year.

Ford will build the F-150 SVT Raptor SuperCrew
Due to the popularity of the F-150 SVT Raptor pickup, which is applauded for its ability to run through deserts and crush almost anything in its path, Ford SVT has decided to create a SuperCrew version (with four full-size doors).
Previously, the Raptor had only been offered in SuperCab form (extended car with tiny doors). The SuperCrew version will carry the same suspension and power train and it is expected to go on sale this year for a small price premium over the SuperCab version. In Dearborn, several sightings have been reported of a completely blacked-out Raptor with black cladding on its nose and flanks and a cobbled-up bed cap. No images have been sent in though. We would have wanted you to conclude for yourself if this was the model in question. Ford has recently launched its new 6.2-liter V8 in the Raptor, which has always been part of the plan. But it should be pointed out that the near-term availability of second body configuration is rare for a specialty product. This only leads to the conclusion that the program has been successful. Ford has said that it will not comment on future products.
Volkswagen expects 2010 to be a tough year despite signs of improvement
Even as there are signs of the car market improving, Volkswagen AG still anticipates that 2010 would be a tough year. However, VW is optimistic that it would fare better than the market.
In a statement released last Friday, group sales head Christian Klingler acknowledged the “clear signs of revival” around the world. VW, Europe’s biggest automaker, said that for the first quarter of the year, the demand for its core VW brand increased by 27%. For that period, group vehicle sales rose by 24.6%. Meanwhile, the European car market is showing strong figures. Last March, new car registrations in the European Union increased by 10.8%, that month’s biggest growth in years. This can be attributed to the extra working day and the revived demand in the four biggest markets outside of Germany. Industry group ACEA found that new registrations increased to 1.64 million vehicles, a dramatic increase from the absolute figure from March 2008. Nonetheless, these figures have not caused volume carmakers such as VW to forget that the pressure is still on for them to rise beyond the challenges.
